Thetis, in Greek mythology, a Nereid loved by Zeus and Poseidon. When Themis (goddess of Justice), however, revealed that Thetis was destined to bear a son who would be mightier than his father, the two gods gave her to Peleus, king of the Myrmidons of Thessaly. Thetis, unwilling to wed a mortal, resisted Peleus’s advances by changing herself into various shapes. But, assisted by the wise centaur Chiron, Peleus finally captured her.

Making cups

Making cups

The bralette is a tight fit. Start by measuring your breast size – since the shape and the size are both highly individual it is recommended to make your own measurements and use the pattern instructions as a general guide. Measuring your breast size is very simple: you only need to determine the length between the tip of your nipple and your rib under the breast. Here is a sketch to help you understand which part exactly you need to measure:

The length of that space determines the length of the starting chain you will need to make.

Cup size B basic instructions

R.1

Chain 14+1, sc into the second stitch from your hook, sc into every chain till you reach the last chain. 3sc into the last chain. Sc into the back of the chain across the row, chain 1, turn.

R. 2 – 10

Sc across both sides of the foundation chain, 3 sc into the top stitch.

R. 10 – 13

Chain 2, dc into the first stitch of the row*. Dc across the row. Dc into the last stitch of the row, chain 1, dc into the same st. Dc across the row.

*We are chaining 2 and then working a dc into the first stitch instead of second to avoid having holes that usually occur between 3 chain and the first dc of the row.

Joining the cups together

Joining the cups together

R. 1

Single crochet at the bottom of the cup**. Add 5 chains in between the cups for size S – chain the required number, then slip stitch into the 1st st of the other cup, sc into the second cup.

**Since there aren’t clear loops in there, you simply need to try to space the sc as evenly as you can: it will be approximately 1 sc into each sc row and 2 sc into each dc row.

***If for some reason you wish to add more (or fewer) chains in between two cups, add an uneven number of them.

R.2

In order to prepare the stitch count for the bodice, we need to add stitches to match it.

B = 3 sts (2 stitches into the first and the last st of the row, 2 sts into the 3d st of the joining chain)

R. 3-4

Sc across the row.

After having finished the Daisy pattern, work 12 sc into the side of the bodice (not the cups). Work 10 rows of 12 sc, then decrease 1 stitch at the end of the R. 11. Work back sc across. Alternate decreases and standard rows till you have 6 stitches left (12 rows). Crochet 12 rows of sc. Decrease 1 stitch at the beginning and 1 st at the end of the row – you have now 4 sts left. Work 17 rows of sc. Decrease till you have 2 sts left. Decrease to 1 stitch. Fasten off, cut the thread. Repeat the same on the other side of the bodice.

Slip stitch into the top stitch of the inner side of a cup (the one that is facing the other cup), sc in next st, chain 1, (skip 1 st, dc in next st) – repeat till the bottom of the cup, chain 1 for cups A, B, and C, (chain 2 for D and E) dc into the middle of the joining chain, continue dc- chain 1, skip 1 on the side of the other cup, ending with single crochet, slip stitch.

Make a chain 60 sts for cups A/B/C, 100 for D/E. Make 2 small tassels and attach them to the ends of the chain (wrap the thread 6 times around a 10 cm piece of cardboard, take it off, knot at the top, cut the bottom, pull the top strings into the 1st chain, tie a knot, put the ends with the rest of the tassel, wrap a piece of thread around, tie the knot and put the ends with the rest of the tassel. Trim the ends).

Lace the chain into the spaces in between the cups.

Making the strings

The left cup string: slip stitch into the 2d stitch from the 1 chain space on the left, chain 1, sc into the same stitch, sc in next st, sc into the chain 1 space, sc in the next stitch. Chain 1 and turn. Work 60 rows of sc.

Make the right cup string mirroring the left cup string.

Sewing in ends

To sew in ends, sew them at least 3 times in different directions, split the thread, pull one part under a thread in the work, tie the ends together. Repeat for all the loose ends.
